Antihydrogen (H)

I have been working on antihydrogen research since1998, presently being part of two antihydrogen collaborations:

 

The goal of the ALPHA collaboration, of which I am a founding member, is to test CPT conservation by comparing the 1S-2S transition of antihydrogen with that of hydrogen. We have been able to trap antihydrogen for over 1000 s, observed the first resonant transitions in the antiatiom using microwaves and obtained a new limit on the charge of the antihydrogen atom. After upgrading the apparatus we observed the 1S-2S transition in trapped antihydrogen and we able to measure the lineshape of the hyperfine transition of the anti-atom.

The GBAR collaboration wants to measure the acceleration of antihydrogen in a matter field, using a novel technique by forming H+, sympathetically cooling this anti-ion in a Paul trap and then removing the excess positron with lasers radiation, leaving a neutral antihydrogen atom experiencing only a gravitational force. Presently, the most of the constituent parts of the experiement have arrived at CERN and hopefully we will be able to produce positrons soon and measure the incoming antiproton flux.

Positrons (e+) and Positronium (Ps)

 

In Swansea we build a two stage positron accumulator, which has, for instance, been used to produce highly magnetised Ps atoms and to gain a better understanding of rotating wall compression in the single particle limit. We build a 243 nm pulsed laser, which has been used to excite positronium from the 1S to the 2P state, and togheter with another laser, we have been able to produce Rydberg Ps. These could be useful for low temperature H production.
